The Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF) was established in 2002 using revenue from the aggregates levy - a tax of £1.60 per tonne on primary aggregate sales.
The stated objectives of the levy are to:
- minimise the demand for primary aggregates
- promote environmentally friendly extraction and transport
- reduce the effect of local aggregate extraction
Recognising the specific issues surrounding the marine industry, a separate marine fund has been established, with funding administered through the Marine Environment Protection Fund administered by Cefas and a separate fund administered by English Heritage.
Through BMAPA, the marine aggregate industry is involved in the assessment and evaluation of marine ALSF projects, and participates on steering groups, provides data and contributes in-kind support to a wide range of projects.
Since 2002, over £9 million has been spent on research associated with marine aggregate extraction. In July 2006, a 250 page Journal of Marine Research was published, summarising the results of much of this work. At the same time a shorter summary report was produced which reviews the current state of knowledge associated with key issues.
